“Ten Questions to Ask About Training Direction”
Where to from here?
Regardless of the potential future possibilities (racing, polo, camp drafting, or pony club) he needs to become the best he can be, with a planned, targeted and mindful plan.
(Also consider the limits of age, breeding, height, weight(15% riders weight))
Conformation and temperament? plus movement
The horses experience to date, (good and other) is really useful information.
The basic training,
(Dressage) is the sequential training process that should take into account the above limitation.
The horse we bought, thoroughbred mare,
Five years old, 485kg,
Unknown pas, compact, great confirmation, temperament/past, to be evaluated.
1) She arrives off the horse truck to your property
– How did she travel?
– How did she load?
– How did she unload?
– How did she lead?
2) After basic familiarisation with paddock/yard observe how well she accommodates to the new environment
3) When given the space what looks as if it is her favourite pace i.e. walk, trot, canter?
4) In this case Canter is her favourite pace as she often chooses to go from walk to Canter. This is a very desireable trait as most things involve lots of cantering higher level dressage, showjumping, eventing, polo etc.
– High set tail, pelvis rotated out – not good canter
– Low set tail – good canter
5) At 485kg, our rider needs to be around 70kg (This will exclude most male riders as they are averaging around 85kg, but the average female rider is about 71kg)
6) We have decided to event this horse, as the skills required will include dressage, showjumping and cross-country, the skill sets can then be easily transferred to other disciplines.
7) What are her natural tendencies (curious/runaway, aggressive etc) Our horse (Millie), she tends to run then turn and snort!
– Under saddle this is likely, so a good stop and turn need to be kept in mind. Millie also does some brave/curious aspects.
8) What does she know on the ground and under saddle? Mobility of the horse.
– Go, stop, turn, park yield
– Millie lunges well but doesn’t park or stand?
– Practice in context in areas required, stop, stay(park)
– Repeat fully tacked
– She walks off without and aid under saddle, I will quietly ask her just practice stop very briefly first, then increase time frame once is easy
9) Lots of hack outs to start (straight lines often as possible)
– She’s not in work so at least 3 days off/week
– 2 of those consecutive
– Millie is now with 2 horses in a paddock, so when 1 leaves, she has company (she is a little herd bound)
10) She has hay add lib, and a oil based feed am/pm stabled at night under light(save clipping) her be in am is messy
– So putting a friend she can touch helped, in conjunction with her training settling tapering
